The SMB sender tool

Security questionnaire software
for the business sending them.

Every security questionnaire platform in 2026 helps vendors answer questionnaires from enterprise customers. VendorAuditly does the opposite — it helps you send questionnaires to your vendors, adapt the questions to what you already know, track responses automatically, and turn every answer into a risk score. Built for the 60-person business assessing 40 suppliers. Not a CISO answering SIG questionnaires.

Quick answer — what is security questionnaire software?
Sender software — you send questionnaires TO your vendors to assess their security risk, track responses, and score compliance. This page describes VendorAuditly's sender tool. Responder software — vendors use it to answer questionnaires their enterprise customers send them faster. VendorAuditly has this too, in the same account — see security questionnaire response software. This page is for senders — the SMB assessing its suppliers.

The distinction nobody explains

Two completely different tools share the same name

Before choosing any security questionnaire platform, you need to know which direction the questionnaire flows. The two categories serve opposite audiences with no functional overlap whatsoever.

📤 You are here — sender

You SEND questionnaires to your vendors

Assess your suppliers’ security. Evaluate. Score. Track.

  • Every draft shows a confidence score and source citation
  • Human review required — accept, edit, or skip, never auto-submitted
  • Answer bank compounds — gets faster with every questionnaire
  • Export as PDF or XLSX
  • Same $49/month account — no separate enterprise contract
✓ VendorAuditly does this too — see security questionnaire response software →

The only adaptive questionnaire engine for SMB vendor assessment

Stop sending 54 generic questions to every vendor.

Every other tool sends the same questionnaire to every vendor regardless of what you already know. VendorAuditly reads your existing documents and selects only the questions that actually matter for that specific vendor — then tells you exactly why it chose them.

Complete workflow end-to-end

Send → chase → review → score → act. Automatically.

Sending the questionnaire is step one. VendorAuditly handles everything after — chasing non-responses, reviewing completed answers, updating compliance checklists, and generating an AI summary of what the answers mean for this specific vendor.

01

Adaptive selection

The system reads your existing documents and vendor type. It selects 8–25 targeted questions, skips what you already know, and shows you exactly why each question was chosen before you send.

8–25 questions, not 54
02

Vendor receives direct link

No account creation required. The vendor opens a direct link, sees their targeted questionnaire with a summary of why these questions were selected, and responds in their browser. No portal friction.

Zero vendor account friction
03

Auto-chase Day 7, 14, 21

If no response in 7 days, a chase email fires automatically. Day 14: second chase. Day 21: vendor flagged as uncooperative, risk score penalised +15 points, internal owner escalated. Zero manual follow-up.

Fully automated
04

AI reviews every answer

On submission, AI scans every answer and flags: blank answers, breach history reports, MFA not enforced, inconsistencies between answers, and GDPR timeline violations. Flags surfaced immediately in the vendor record.

What AI flags in questionnaire responses

Six answer patterns that require immediate follow-up

Not all questionnaire answers deserve equal attention. These six response patterns reveal that a vendor’s security posture is weaker than their documentation suggests — and require a specific action before the vendor is scored as compliant.

🚨 Critical

Blank answer on any security question

A blank is not a negative answer — it is a deliberately avoided answer. The vendor saw the question and chose not to respond. That decision is itself a signal about transparency and security culture.

Action: Request a specific written response: “This question was left blank. Please provide a direct answer so we can complete the assessment.”
🚨 Critical

Breach history — any non-negative answer

“Yes, we had an incident in 2023” or even a vague “there was a minor issue” triggers an immediate flag. AI captures any non-negative answer to the breach history question and surfaces it in the risk summary.

Action: Request full incident details: what happened, what data was affected, what changed, and whether customers were notified. Non-disclosure of breaches is a dealbreaker.
🚨 Critical

MFA “required by policy” not technically enforced

Policy-only MFA means some staff will not have it enabled. Technically enforced MFA means nobody can bypass it. The difference is material — one is a control, the other is a suggestion.

Action: Follow up: “Is MFA technically enforced via your identity provider, or is compliance dependent on individual staff action?”
⚠ Amber

Breach notification timeline exceeds GDPR requirement

GDPR requires notification within 72 hours. If the vendor answers “More than 72 hours” or “No defined process” to the breach notification question, this is a direct GDPR compliance gap in your vendor relationship.

Action: Raise directly: “Our GDPR obligations require notification within 72 hours. Please confirm your notification process meets this timeline in writing.”
⚠ Amber

BCP exists but has never been tested

An untested BCP is a hypothesis. The plan may be complete on paper and fail in practice. “We have a BCP” and “We have a tested BCP” are not equivalent from a continuity risk perspective.

Action: Ask: “When was the BCP last tested and what format did the test take? Please provide the date and a brief description of the test outcome.”
⚠ Amber

Sub-processors “none” from a SaaS company

A SaaS vendor running on AWS, using Datadog for monitoring, and Zendesk for support who answers “no sub-processors” has either misunderstood the question or is not tracking their own data flows — both are concerning for a GDPR data processor.

Action: Follow up: “Please list all cloud infrastructure, monitoring, and support platforms that handle data on our behalf, including what data each processes.”

VendorAuditly vs the market

The only SMB vendor assessment tool in a market of enterprise responder tools

SecurityPal, Iris AI, Loopio, Conveyor, SafeBase, Vanta, Drata, and Skypher all help vendors answer questionnaires their enterprise customers send them. This comparison covers the sender side specifically — VendorAuditly also has a responder tool (the Answer Bank), included in the same account rather than sold separately.

Note: SecurityPal, Iris AI, Loopio, and Conveyor are dedicated platforms for security and sales teams at tech companies managing inbound questionnaires from enterprise customers — a genuinely different problem from an SMB ops manager assessing 40 suppliers, which is what this table covers. FAQ

Security questionnaire software — every question answered

AEO-optimised for featured snippets and AI search engines. Every answer is complete and under 80 words.

What is security questionnaire software?
Two opposite tools share this name. Sender software — send questionnaires to vendors, track responses, score risk. This page covers VendorAuditly's sender tool for assessing your own vendors. Responder software — answer questionnaires enterprise customers send you. VendorAuditly has this too — see security questionnaire response software, included in the same account.
What is an adaptive security questionnaire?
An adaptive questionnaire selects questions based on what you already know about the vendor. If ISO 27001 is already uploaded, certification questions are skipped. If you are running a GDPR checklist, data processing questions are prioritised. VendorAuditly’s adaptive engine produces 8–25 targeted questions instead of 54 generic ones — and shows you exactly why each question was selected before you send.
How does security questionnaire software work for vendor assessment?
Six steps: (1) Adaptive selection based on vendor type and compliance gaps. (2) Send via direct link — no vendor account. (3) Auto-chase at Day 7 and Day 14. (4) Day 21 — vendor flagged as uncooperative, risk score penalised. (5) AI reviews every answer on submission. (6) Answers update vendor risk score and compliance checklists automatically.
What questions should be on a vendor security questionnaire?
Five categories: certifications (ISO 27001, SOC 2), data handling (encryption, storage, sub-processors, deletion), access controls (MFA enforcement, offboarding), incident history (breaches, notification procedure), and business continuity (BCP tested, RTO). Scale count to vendor tier: 8 for standard, 15 for important, 25 for critical. Get the full free questionnaire templates →
How is VendorAuditly different from SecurityPal, Iris AI, or Loopio?
SecurityPal, Iris AI, and Loopio are dedicated, enterprise-priced tools for answering questionnaires your customers send you. VendorAuditly's sender tool (this page) is for assessing your own vendors' security. If you need the responder side instead, VendorAuditly's own Answer Bank covers that too — at $49/month in the same account, not a separate enterprise contract.
How many questions should a vendor security questionnaire have?
Scale to vendor criticality and what you already know. Standard vendors: 8 questions. Important vendors with data access: 12–15. Critical vendors: 20–25. Adaptive selection reduces this further — if ISO 27001 is uploaded, skip certification questions. Shorter, targeted questionnaires achieve higher completion rates and better quality answers than 54-question generic sets.
What should you do with red-flag questionnaire responses?
Three actions: (1) Blank answers — not a negative, an avoided answer. Request a specific written response before scoring. (2) Breach history or MFA not enforced — raise within 48 hours, request remediation timeline. (3) Inconsistencies with uploaded documents — request clarification before accepting. VendorAuditly’s AI flags all three categories automatically on submission.
Is there free security questionnaire software for small businesses?
VendorAuditly is free forever on 3 vendors — including adaptive questionnaire sending, auto-chase, AI response review, and risk scoring. No credit card. Free question templates across all five categories are available at /vendor-security-questionnaire without any account. Paid plans from $49/month cover unlimited vendors with full automation and audit export.
